Western Justice is sharing to help reveal the manner in which extremist groups operate, their ties to and cooperation with other extremist groups, and the continued threat they pose to our lifestyles and livelihoods.
Overview and Origins
The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), founded in 1979, is a legal advocacy organization that embraces an animal extremist ideology. Initially focused solely on animal issues, the group has more recently expanded into environmental activism as well. Through high-profile lawsuits, lobbying, and legal training, ALDF works to reshape the legal system in ways that advance its animal rights and environmental agenda.
The organization not only champions new laws aligned with its mission but also aggressively fights legislation that would restrict the tactics of animal extremist groups. For instance, ALDF opposes laws designed to protect farmers and ranchers from undercover operatives who misrepresent themselves to gain employment, often with the sole intent of harming animal agriculture.
Alliances and Legal Advocacy
ALDF has defended and supported radical groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Friends of the Earth—an organization listed on the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium database (https://www.trackingterrorism.org/).
Its network of affiliations is extensive and includes:
- Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing
- Environmental Law Institute
- Center for Animal Law Studies
Together with these institutions, ALDF formed a coalition against laboratory animal research.
Additionally, the National District Attorney’s Association (NDAA) has partnered with ALDF and the ASPCA to create the National Center for Prosecution of Animal Abuse (NCPAA). According to the ALDF website, NCPAA “educates and trains prosecutors and law enforcement professionals on the effective handling of animal cruelty cases, with a particular focus on the link between animal abuse and violence toward humans.”
Internal Culture and Extremist Ideology
The culture of ALDF reflects its deeply entrenched anti-animal agriculture stance. This position is openly promoted on its website and reinforced through staff policies.
Their mission statement declares:
“It is the mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. To support that mission, the Animal Legal Defense Fund strives to create an office atmosphere that encourages and supports the best practices and products available to reduce the suffering of and harm to nonhuman animals.”
This philosophy extends to their internal rules, which prohibit staff and volunteers from bringing animal-derived products to ALDF offices or functions. Prohibited items include:
- Meat, fish, and poultry
- Eggs and dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese)
- Leather and wool
In effect, ALDF enforces a culture of veganism and exclusion of traditional animal-based goods, further demonstrating its extremist approach to advocacy.
